Phone Country Codes Explained
Understand international dialing codes, how to read a number's country and why it matters for verification.
Every international phone number starts with a country calling code defined by the ITU's E.164 standard. Codes are one to three digits long: 1 for the United States and Canada, 44 for the United Kingdom, 234 for Nigeria, 880 for Bangladesh.
Reading a number
A number like +44 7700 900123 begins with 44, so it belongs to the UK. The rest identifies the operator and subscriber.
Why the country matters
Some services only accept numbers from certain countries or show different content per region. Choosing the right country on SMS Free gives you a number whose code matches, and we automatically discard numbers that do not.
Longest-prefix matching
Because codes have different lengths, systems check the longest match first. 1 and 1242 both start with 1, but 1242 is the Bahamas. Correct matching prevents wrong-country numbers.
